Join us for the Woolhope Wassail on January 20th 2024.
Wassailing is an ancient tradition that has its roots in the West of England. Villages and parishes would gather as they became aware of the days getting longer and celebrate that spring was not far away. Wassailers would appoint a King and Queen of the Wassail and they would have been carried from orchard to orchard to set fires (burning prunings) and make lots of noise to ward of evil spirits and to feed the tree with cider and toast.
The apple tree man may have been spotted….
Wassail means with health….When someone shouts ‘Wassail’ you shout back ‘Drinkhail’ and drink cider!
